Considering the massive size of these, I’m a little surprised that taking 3 of them only gets you 75% of DV. (Probably because these are soft gels). I like that they arrive very securely packaged with both a beefy outer seal and a sturdy internal safety seal; everything about the packaging feels like a higher than usual quality. The bottle I requested 2/2023 was made 11/2022 and is good through 5/2026. I am content with my smaller capsule magnesium… so this bottle will be consumed by my husband who better appreciates these are chelated and who goes through supplements far more quickly than I do. I took the time to shop around and see if the price point (at least on the day I requested these) is comparable to other nationally known brands and these do seem a bit pricy vs quantity. I’d recommend these only if you prefer softgels, can handle their larger size, and/or want to feel more confident you’re getting the proper absorption from your magnesium. I know some swear by magnesium for a sleep aid but I cannot vouch for that as I have the kind of insomnia that scoffs at more natural remedies.
These cost more and give you much less. The 400MG in 2 Gel caps were not only more affordable, they were a much better deal as you got more for a reasonable price.
I previously have used magnesium citrate to help me relax before bed, but sometimes I find that they work a little too well with moving things along digestively, which is great if you need that, but I find that whenever I don't, I skip taking the magnesium. So I was hoping to find an alternative magnesium supplement that was a little easier on the stomach, but still offered the benefits of relaxation and helping me fall asleep. The dosage is pretty similar to other magnesium supplements I've used. The mag citrate I've been using most recently has 133mg of magnesium per capsule, while these have 105 mg of magnesium per capsule. I usually take 1-2 capsules of the magnesium citrate, so I would probably take 2 of these (I am 5'6, 115 lbs). I will say that the capsules are larger than I expected. Most of the softgel type supplements I've taken are much smaller, these are actually larger than almost all of my other capsule supplements. However, since they are softgels, they are smooth and easy to swallow for someone who is used to taking a lot of supplements. If you have any trouble swallowing pills though, these might be larger than is ideal for you. I've bought supplements from the KAL brand before, so that is a brand I am relatively familiar with and feel like I can trust. I appreciate that they specify as being "GMO Free, Gluten Free, and Soy Free". Like other magnesium supplements, I do find taking them to have a gentle relaxing/calming effect, so I find it's great to take these before bed, or if I'm having anxiety during the day. Taking 1 or 2 in the evening seemed to have a slightly less obvious effect on my digestive tract, but I still feel like they helped move things along the next morning, but not in an urgent way.
These are all around pretty good. The are a fair amount of extra ingredients so please read them before purchasing.
I've been taking magnesium for a little while since a friend recommended looking into it for my fibro pain and brain fog, and it's seriously improved my life--the severe leg cramps are down to once in 3 months instead of 1-2x/week, the brain fog is drastically reduced, the numbness in my feet that hadn't been going away despite 5000 mcg daily B12 is GONE, my daily muscle pain level has dropped from about a 5 to a 2, and I don't fatigue quite as fast. I'm at the point where I think I'll be supplementing magnesium for the foreseeable future, because it feels like my body is reversing the last 5 years of increasing disability. I still have fibro and a few other chronic illnesses, but they're not keeping me almost bedbound now, which is a huge improvement. This is about the 4th or 5th brand of magnesium glycinate supplements I've tried, and I've discovered that all magnesium supplements aren't created equal--some magnesium compounds are only absorbed at about 8% of the dose, while glycinate's up around 40%, and some others absorb at higher rates but cause diarrhea. The balance in these is really good. The gelcaps are a little bigger than some of the others I've taken, but they're still pretty easy to swallow, which is saying something given that I've always had issues swallowing pills. Taking the full day's supply in one dose does seem to cause some lower GI looseness, but taking 2 in the morning and 1-2 with dinner solves that issue nicely. While researching my friend's recommendation to take magnesium, I found a couple of really interesting points as to why my doctors hadn't mentioned it as a possibility. First, they can't really test for it accurately since 99% of the magnesium in the body is in bones and muscles, and the body pulls from the bones as needed to keep muscles supplied; since there's only about 1% circulating in the bloodstream, usually in transport to somewhere that it's needed, blood tests don't show deficiency until there's literally almost nothing left, and they need a muscle biopsy to find out an accurate level. Second, most doctors don't get but a few hours of education on nutrition during their med school instruction, so many don't know the symptoms of magnesium deficiency and how those symptoms overlap with B12, D3, and calcium deficiency. This has the dosage I need to continue bringing my body back to a healthier state, and I can easily supplement 100% or even 125% when needed to stop a leg cramp, or to stop muscle soreness from pushing myself to regain endurance and physical ability (I was able to be active about 1 hr/day last winter, and am now up to about 3-4 hours on average-to-good days). Five stars.
