Rancid Smell and Taste

I called Solaray because this product has a distinct rancid taste and odor. I was told that it is due to a rice extract blend which they recently added. She said that it is harmless. They must have received other complaints because they are working on revising the formula. Anything rancid is not good for the human body. I suggest not purchasing this product until they have removed the rice extract.

Something definitely amiss.....

I have taken all kinds of Solaray supplements over many years including this Magnesium Citrate and never had any problems with them until now. When I first received my last bottle of this Magnesium Citrate and opened it, I was suddenly hit with a very strong lacquer/varnish smell which was VERY disturbing and made me gag. And I mean a STRONG smell. I immediately dumped all the pills into a glass bowl to see if I could smell whether it was the plastic bottle or the pills themselves and I could not tell as they both smelled like lacquer/varnish. I tried taking some of the pills and they had a strange taste that I'd never experienced before with the Solaray Magnesium Citrate. Over some time both the bottle and the pills continued to smell like lacquer/varnish. I want to believe that it was the bottle producing the smell and the bottle outgassed plastic (with the strong lacquer/varnish smell) into the pills but I am not sure. At any rate, the smell was in the pills so I decided to stop taking them as I was afraid I might be ingesting some kind of very bad toxin. Looks like I will move on to my other two favorite supplement brands which are Solgar and NOW to see if I can get Magnesium Citrate through one of them. I will continue to use Solaray supplements but this experience has caused me to be hesitant in using any of their supplements now. If I order another Solaray supplement and experience the same lacquer/varnish smell then that will very likely end my usage of Solaray products for good which I hope will not happen.

works great!

3 or 4 of them about 2 hours before bed, and I am out for 7-9 hours solid. This may not seem like a big deal, but I have had chronic insomnia for many years. I began taking mag citrate about 9 months ago, and the rest is history. I must've been super deficient because I used to take 1 cap and couldn't keep my eyes open (and this would happen at all times of the day).

Now, I take 3 or 4 in the late evening and get really relaxed. I also take a small melatonin dose at bedtime, but I had been doing this prior to the mag citrate and would only get 4-5 hours of sleep.

Stinks but works

Still smells bad and has an unpleasant taste, but the magnesium helps (a natural muscle relaxer for my neck DJD, as directed by my dr) and doesn’t have unnecessary fillers, so I’m reluctantly taking it again.

Solaray Magnesium Citrate 400 Mg Supplements, 180 Count

I have been taking these supplements for a couple of years. They are easy to swallow and help me have a good night sleep. It gives me the necessary daily magnesium requirements my body needs. Good product. Will buy again.
