This is it!

NOTE: I can only comment on the unflavored version because that's what I bought. I'm not sure how the flavored versions taste, and I'm not interested in those.

Off the shelf proteins almost universally are full of junk including sugar. At worst they taste like chalk and at best they're a glorified ice cream milk shake. I wanted a no-nonsense, totally plain protein powder that doesn't smell and taste like baby formula (I'm looking at you, whey) that I could add my own ingredients to.

If you've never used casein protein, give this a shot! Nutricost's casein protein mixes with water like a dream, even surpassing modern whey protein's abiility to mix, and it smells and tastes better. Because casein is essentially cheese protein, I verified that this is legit casein by curdling it into cheese on the stove. Indeed, you can make a rather tasteless cheese with this casein! Haha Trust me, you don't want to. I only did so to make sure I wasn't consuming industrial chalk dust or something.

This protein is quite versatile. If you want to just generally add protein to everything you eat, because it mixes easily, you can add it to things like sauces. It of course works well in a workout shake.

What I've found really interesting about casein, this being my first casein protein, is just how satiating it is. Because casein digest so slowly, you can eat a fairly small amount of it and then feel full for hours after. It's the most satiating form of protein I've ever eaten. If you want to control your hunger, casein might be something you'll want to try. I was and still am astounded at how long a couple scoops can keep me full.

I won't be buying any other protein powder ever again. Casein is the answer! And Nutricost's casein is absurdly cheap. But even if it was as expensive as other casein protein powders, I'd still buy it. Once you go with casein, you can't go back to whey.

Prop 65 warning missing online pictures

Did not open an return it as soon as I saw prop 65 warning. Problem is Nutricost purposely does not show this warning on online pictures. I will say away from this brand..

It has the flavor and texture that it's supposed to.

The real deal, affordable (likely the cheapest of the major brands like Now, BulkSupps, True Nutrition, Protein Factory), and one of the few remaining sources for 100% micellar casein. Real micellar casein is like bland chalk. That's how it's supposed to be. When put in an acidic environment (say with juices or your stomach) it will get a bit clumpy. That's also how it's supposed to be. There used to be more unflavored casein suppliers (and a wider variety of flavors), but it's likely that they weren't too popular with people who don't know what it should be like, and then people stopped buying it. Now, most products have fillers or are blends with cheaper (whey) protein, and still marketed as "long acting", which is good for their (the company's) bottom line. Cheaper to make, more purchasers, and all that. But sometimes, we just want pure ingredients for us to mix in without the fillers, and this is the one.

Tastes like Ricotta cheese

I use this with whey protein by the same company. It tastes like Ricotta cheese and that flavor translates to what ever you add it too. It's not over powering though. Add berries, or any fruit. I take this at night with my creatine. I've do take a fiber supplement, but your mileage in that area will vary. I also use this one a lot in my baking, more so than the whey protein because the texture is velvety. It mixes really well. makes really fluffy pancakes when you add it to the dry ingredients. I even add it to cauliflower mash to give it more body and give it a texture more like regular mash potatoes. Again, what you give up in flavor, you gain in versatility. . . try adding your cinnamon or vanilla flavored powders to mash potatoes. Get this for what it is, not for what it isn't. Its a versatile supplement that adds protein to your food without adding a lot of calories or drastically changing it's flavor profile. Like, you can add this to plane greek yogurt and you have a low fat cheese substitute that you can make eggplant parm with. crap. now i'm hungry.

Excellent, low cost with no junk.

It's really difficult to find protein without added junk, whether it's sodium, or sucralose, or some preservative almost every single brand has something crappy added to it. Up until now I've been using Now's brand of casein protein, I have nothing bad to say about them, but they are a bit expensive. Nutricost comes in at about 3/4 the price per serving AND has about 20% more protein per serving (24g vs 19g) so I decided to give it a try. Nutrients are otherwise similar, ingredients are just casein protein and sunflower lecithin.

After reading reviews on this being chalky, or not mixing well, or having little rock like things in the mix I was fairly hesitant. I was pleasantly surprised on all fronts. The powder was very smooth and mixed well with water, I'd say it was very slightly more fine than the Now protein, and mixed just as well. Taste is, well it's pure casein and nothing else so it really has no taste at all, comparable to the Now brand. Certainly it's not a bad taste, it's just no taste at all. My pre workout smoothie in the morning is 2 scoops protein, water,, 2 tablespoons plain greek yogurt and a handful of frozen strawberries and that tastes great. My pre sleep shake is just one scoop in a glass of water, I mix it up and just down it and it goes down fine.

The most important thing is the lack of junk, no sucralose or other artificial sweeteners, no added sodium, no preservatives, etc. If I'm in the mood for something sweeter I can just add some Stevia or honey, but 99% of the time I just want pure protein. I've scoured Amazon and this is the cheapest casein protein that comes in a pure form without any added junk. Sure the massive 5lb container is a pain, but I just transfer it to one of my old 2lb containers once a week or so, well worth the much lower price.

Thick, tastes funny, doesn’t mix well

Their whey isolate is excellent. The casein is really thick and doesn’t dissolve well. I’m halfway through a tub and it seems like it’s tasting worse. It even makes a frozen smoothie with fruit taste weird.
