Expensive, fishy tasting, inadequate dose of omega-3
Serving: 3 gummies (20 per container)

Total Omega Oil (Chia Oil & DHA) 275 mg as:
Omega-3 (Alpha Linolenic Acid) 130 mg
Omega-6 (Linoleic Acid) 130 mg
Omega-9 (Oleic Acid) 30 mg
DHA as life'sDHA(TM) from algae 50 mg

Other Ingredients: Glucose syrup, sugar, glucose, corn starch modified, water, malic acid, natural flavors, sodium citrate, natural colors (annatto and turmeric), coconut oil, and carnauba wax.

**life'sDHA is a trademark of DSM Nutritional Products.

PROS

1. Vegan, using corn starch and carnauba wax as thickeners instead of gelatin.
2. Uses glucose and sugar as sweeteners instead of high fructose corn syrup.
3. No particularly bad fillers.
4. These gummies are fresh, soft and chewy.

CONS

1. These gummies have an unpleasant, fishy undertaste. It is very hard to disguise the taste of algae in a gummy, which is why omega-3 supplements are typically sold as gel capsules meant to be swallowed.

2. The cost is very high for a mere 20-day supply.

3. It is omega-3 that is important for health. The other omegas in this supplement are unnecessary fillers. The dosage of omega-3 fatty acids contained in 3 of these gummies is very small: 130 mg of ALA and 50 mg of DHA, and only the DHA is fully bioavailable. In order to benefit from ALA as a source of omega-3, it must be consumed in quite large doses, because the body can only utilize it when it is broken down into EPA and DHA. The U.S Institute of Medicine recommends a daily ALA intake of 1600 mg per day for men and 1100 mg per day for women. (See below for additional information.)

4. If you purchase omega-3 supplements as gel capsules, you will not only avoid the fishy taste mentioned above, you will receive a much higher dose of fully bioavailable EPA and DHA. Most omega-3 gel capsules come in doses of 200-500 mg each, and they cost far less than these gummies. When taken to relieve various health conditions, the typical recommended, effective dose of omega-3, in the form of a combined dose of EPA and DHA, ranges from 500-4000 mg per day. The typical dosage recommendation for healthy adults is 200-500 mg daily. This means that, in order to take the lowest effective dose of omega-3 of 200 mg/day, one would have to consume 12 of these gummies per day versus a single gel capsule.

5. As stated above, the other omegas besides omega-3 in this supplement are pointless. There is no need to supplement with omega-6, because the American diet is overloaded with it, and it is quite unhealthy if consumed in excess. Too much omega-6 is associated with inflammation, high blood pressure, edema, and increased potential for blood clots. It absolutely should not be touted as a health product! As for omega-9 fatty acid (oleic acid), though it is a type of healthy, monounsaturated fat which is found in olive oil and almonds, there is no need to purchase it in a supplement, because it is naturally produced by the human body. However, just as for the omega-6 in this supplement, there is such a tiny amount of omega-9, it is not worth mentioning either.

6. Like all gummy candy, these gummies are high in sugar and very sticky, which means, in order to protect dental health, it is crucial to brush and floss very soon after consuming them.

ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF VEGAN OMEGA-3

Freshfield Vegan Omega 3 DHA, 500 mg per capsule. Utilizes Schizochytrium algae but also contains carrageenan, which promotes inflammation. Not recommended for that reason.

Life Extension vegetarian DHA 200 mg per softgel. Utilizes Schizochytrium algae. NO carrageenan. A good possibility.

Nordic Naturals Algae DHA, 250 mg per softgel. Utilizes Schizochytrium algae but also contains carrageenan, which promotes inflammation. Not recommended for that reason.

Sapling Vegan Omega 3 Supplement - Plant Based DHA & EPA Fatty Acids, 500 mg per capsule. Utilizes Schizochytrium algae but also contains carrageenan, which promotes inflammation. Not recommended for that reason.

INFORMATION ABOUT OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

There are three main types of omega-3 fatty acids whose health benefits have been well researched. These include EPA, DHA, and ALA:

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are called marine omega-3 fatty acids, because they are found, fully bioavailable, in fatty fish and certain algae, most especially the algae, Schizochytrium. (See references below.)

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found in plant sources such as green leafy vegetables, soybeans, walnuts, and seeds such as chia, flax, and hemp, with flaxseeds containing the highest amount. It is important to note that, in order to obtain omega-3 health benefits from these sources, the body must first convert the ALA into EPA and DHA, and this conversion process is inefficient in humans. On average, only 1-10% of ALA is converted into EPA, and only 1-5% into DHA. The amount of the conversion is also impacted by the availability in the body of adequate amounts of the following nutrients: B6, B7, calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, and iron, which most vegans and vegetarians probably already supplement in their diet (especially B vitamins). Note that the U.S Institute of Medicine recommends a daily ALA intake of 1600 mg per day for men and 1100 mg per day for women. It is difficult to obtain remotely enough ALA simply from leafy greens because, for example, 1 cup of raw spinach only has 40 mg of ALA, and 1 cup of raw kale only has a little more ALA at 120 mg But If a vegan or vegetarian (or a meat eater, for that matter) is willing to add the following seeds and nuts to their diet on a regular basis, it is easily possible to obtain an adequate dose of EPA and DHA from the diet alone:

One ounce (28 grams) of chia seeds provides 4,915 mg of ALA. The body would convert this to between 49-490 mg of EPA and 49-245 mg DHA.

One ounce (28 grams) of flaxseeds contains 6,388 mg of ALA. The body would convert this to between 64-640 mg of EPA and 64-320 mg DHA.

One ounce (28 grams) of hemp seeds contains 6,000 mg of ALA. The body would convert this to between 60-600 mg of EPA and 60-300 mg DHA.

One ounce (28 grams) of walnuts contains 2,542 mg of ALA. The body would convert this to between 25-254 mg of EPA and 25-127 mg DHA.

NOTE: In order to fully digest seeds, it is a good idea to grind them up in a food processor or coffee grinder before adding them to either one’s morning smoothie or morning cereal, or sprinkling them over a salad or casserole. If consumed whole, they will very likely simply pass through the GI tract undigested and become expensive fiber.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Research has indicated that the most health benefits are obtained from an omega-3 supplement which offers a combination of EPA and DHA. Some of these benefits include:

1. Anti-inflammatory. Research indicates that this supplement can help reduce inflammation. This is very important because, over the course of many decades, an abundance of scientific research has indicated that inflammation is either the direct cause or a major contributing factor in virtually all disease, including especially: cancer, heart disease and autoimmune disorders such as arthritis.

2. Prevents heart disease and stroke. Research indicates that this supplement can help reduce LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, lower blood pressure, and increase blood flow by improving the ability of blood vessels to dilate normally.

3. Improved eye health. Research indicates that this supplement can help reduce the incidence of dry eyes, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.

4. Improved brain function. Research indicates that this supplement can help improve mental clarity and lower the risk of dementia.

RELEVANT RESEARCH

Bowman, L., et al. Great taste, almost perfect
Great Omega 3-6-9 DHA content. I would love for them to be more potent, so that we don’t need to eat three per serving. We would have save more bottles and reduce waste on these vitamin products if they all would have made them twice more potent. Seriously. As for taste, they are great tasting for gummies vitamin product. Sure they are not candy so some vitamin/fishy smell is expected.

Gross Taste At First
Oddly, these taste bad at first, but then get better rather than the reverse which is usually the case. You have an oily, strong taste when you initially put the chew in your mouth. As you chew it up, you start to taste the fruit taste. The oily taste for the most part goes away, so this is not as bad as having a bad aftertaste.
I take these to cover my bases with this supplement, I can't say that I notice a difference taking it versus not.

Tasty Citrus Flavor
I've tried several gummy health supplements recently and these were the best tasting by far. They're citrus flavored. Unlike other brands, these are not coated in sugar and not super sticky. Each one is easy to take out of the bottle. I take 2 per day and see them as something of a treat since they really are like a gummy candy. They're currently $19.99 for 60. Since I take 2 per day it's basically $10 per month which isn't bad. I will certainly buy more when I run out so long as the price doesn't increase.
