Sorry Kelly :(

Like other reviewers with a less than positive experience, it pains me to write this review because I love Kelly, have all of her books, and follow her nutritional advice with great results. Sadly, this powder really did not work for me. I do believe in the quality and ethical sourcing of the ingredients used, so stars for that.

The packaging, while more eco friendly than a plastic container, is a NIGHTMARE to work with. You have to dig your hand so far down to get to the scooper and end up covered in sticky collagen powder (and also wasting product). I have tried mixing the product into smoothies, using a hand mixer, hot water, coffee, almond milk in my Nespresso frother (hot and cold setting), and 90% of the time this stuff just DOES. NOT. MIX. It clumps no matter how little or how slowly you add it. I really tried to make it work but it was near impossible to get it to mix into anything and if it did, it ended up settling on the bottom of my glass before I was finished.

I also experienced the crazy frothiness of the product the few times I was actually able to get it to incorporate, but I was using it in a latte so it really didn't bother me much. I didn't experience any GI issues from this product as others did. I ordered both the original and vanilla and while I don't get any beef taste from either, the vanilla is sickeningly sweet and has a horrible aftertaste. I tried mixing the unflavored and vanilla to try and mellow the sweetness but it is just so overpowering.

Again, I feel horrible writing this review but this product is expensive and I wouldn't want someone to spend their hard earned money on a product that is unsatisfactory. Will stick with my trusted brands of collagen/protein for my Fab4 needs.

Mixed Review of the Chocolate and Vanilla Flavors

Like many of you, I've been following Kelly's nutritional advice for years and was eager for this product release. After trying both the chocolate and vanilla, I felt compelled to leave a review.

I'm leaving both a short and long review because some people skim and some want context.

TL;DR: Buy the chocolate and skip the vanilla and plain flavor. Follow the Fab 4 Smoothie protocol with a Vitamix and you shouldn't have any blending issues. Get creative when fishing the scoop out of the bag and maybe have a spare container for the powder in case the bag doesn't seal well.

Contextual Review
Somethings you should about my preferences:
1. I follow the Fab 4 Smoothie protocol and use a Vitamix to blend my smoothies
2. I don't have a sweet tooth
3. I prefer vanilla flavored protein powder over chocolate for both taste and because it doesn't dominate other smoothie ingredients
3. I would be vegan if my body could thrive without meat because I hate the taste of it
4. I previously consumed a chocolate beef isolate protein powder and enjoyed it
5. I value grass-fed, pasture-raised meats and will spend more money on them without hesitation
6. I hate the bulk and waste of protein packaging

Now for my thoughts:
1. I appreciate the effort to minimize packaging waste but I have trouble resealing the chocolate bag because the powder is caked in the seal. Also, I haven't yet located the scoop for that bag. I was able to find the scoop more easily in the vanilla bag, but it took some creativity to move it upwards without putting my hand all in it. (Tip: squeeze the outside of the bag until you find something that feels hard and then gradually apply pressure underneath it to move it upwards toward the top.)

2. While the powder does provide a lighter, frothier blend, I have not had the troubles others have had. My Vitamix blends it perfectly. (Perhaps it's because I'm following the Fab 4 Smoothie protocol so it balances out the frothiness?)

3. With regards to flavor, this is where my review on the individual flavors diverges. While it can be on the sweeter side (and almost eliminates the need to add 1/4c of fruit), I have found the chocolate flavor way more appealing because it masks the beef flavor. I find the beef flavor and after taste of the vanilla overwhelming and unpleasant. To not waste product, I will begin to mix the two together to minimize the taste. However, this now means every smoothie will be a chocolate smoothie which is a mental and flavor adjustment for me. (I also originally planned to purchase the unflavored powder, but that will now not be happening.)

4. I think overall this is a high quality product (ingredient sourcing, lack of hexane) and I feel the price is justified. Just stick with one flavor...chocolate.

Very disappointed...

I’ve read both of Kelly’s books and her nutrition advice has been life changing for me. BUT I did not like this protein powder at all. I couldn’t get past the flavor. It tasted and smelled too much like beef and I just couldn’t stomach it in my smoothie. I had spinach, strawberries, flax seed, and almond butter in it and none of those masked the taste/smell for me. Very disappointed- especially for the price.

I'm a healthcare professional and I recommend it to many others!

As a holistic healthcare provider I find it very hard to find a pure protein powder without a lot of gums and additives. I'm sad to see people complaining about it "not mixing" or the "bag being difficult". WOW this is NOT a concern for me...what goes IN my body IS a concern. It mixes just fine in a blender, no issues at all, and if you don't like the bag simply transfer it to a new container at home. I appreciate that I'm not throwing out a ton of plastic every time I use a bag.

I absolutely love the taste! No stevia, so no stevia aftertaste or weird chemicals smells like other flavored bone broth proteins. The plain bone broth is a little "beefy" which doesn't bother me at all in a smoothie.

I just really appreciate the convenience of protein without all the nasty gums and additives of other brands. Kelly knows what she is doing and if you don't like her protein, you are welcome to use another brand that is full of gums and thickeners, hurts the environment with plastic containers, and uses unknown flavorings. Thanks Kelly!

Kelly did not come to play!

This is literally the best tasting protein powder I’ve tried. I know it’s expensive. However, I trust the ingredients (chocolate only has three). It’s clean and I no longer need to buy a separate collagen product, since this one is naturally high in collagen. Reading other reviews- it DOES foam if you don’t add a fat. I make her Fab Four Smoothie every morning, which has fat. So i suggest adding a fat to your smoothie.
I do wish in the future she maybe offers a discount subscription option. I want to purchase the vanilla next. Chocolate is really good. Doesn’t taste like a Frostie or anything like that. Let’s not be delusional. It’s still a protein powder. But it’s a DELICIOUS clean option.

Disappointed

I agree with so many of the other reviews, that while I love Kelly's books, ethos and overall heath strategy, this protein powder left a LOT to be desired.

I can only review the chocolate flavor, but after trying it 3 separate times, I can't handle more than a sip or two. The taste of artificial sweetener is so incredibly overwhelming, that I'll be throwing the rest of the bag away. Likewise, as other reviewers mentioned, this particular powder both foams and swells significantly in size. I am thankful I only had a few sips, as after looking back at my cup about 30 minutes after making it, the smoothie had begun to actually spill out of the cup that was previously about an inch to the top. I can't imagine how a full smoothie would feel in your stomach.

Still happy to recommend so many of Kelly's other products, but sadly this protein powder is not one of them.
