Great organic product!

I wanted a protein powder that compliments my pea protein powder, and one that did not have added sugars of any kind, so this is perfect. I use a teaspoon each day in my smoothie, along with a teaspoon of hemp and a teaspoon of organic pea protein. These three proteins work synergistically together for the body to utilize well, and a teaspoon of each does not overwhelm the taste of the cherries, banana, and strawberries that I add. I do not add greens to my smoothies, as I discovered that you need chewing and saliva to digest greens and break down the many nutritional components found in them.

From first taste this product worried me. Returned.

This product had an off flavor. It tasted like very stale nuts of some sort. The was no information on the label. No ingredient list (I get that it's rice protein powder, but still no ingredient list), no information on testing by independents, no origin, no country of manufacture, etc. Because of the off flavor and the lack of label information, I decided to return this product. It also imparted a texture to my smoothie that was unlike anything I've experienced before, and not in a good way. I was relieved to be able to return this for a refund. Too many unknowns, and I'm surprised that a food product like this can be sold with so little label information. It reminds me of the melamine in petfood and baby formula to boost protein scheme.

Wow -- not what I expected "Unflavored" to taste like

I've tried quite a few protein powders over the years. I usually buy chocolate -- sometimes vanilla or strawberry. This time I decided to get something "unflavored". As it turns out, however, this powder does have a taste. I'd put it somewhere between "yuk" and "I can't drink this". I tried other powders that didn't taste great, but I'm not very picky. In this case, I simply can't drink this. Even blended with berries and a banana, the "unflavor" takes over and makes it (to me) undrinkable.

I didn't have trouble getting it to fully blend, but I use a Vitamix which works pretty well.

Good Unflavored Rice Protein Powder

Due to various food intolerances, rice protein is the only kind of powdered protein I can use in my smoothies. This brand was completely unflavored - no additives nor stevia or anything like that. So if you don't like the straight-up taste of powdered brown rice, then you'd better blend it with something else. It blends well with fruit in my ninja blender. It was a good price point for a large container, which I appreciate since I use it daily. It is 100 calories, 20g of protein per included scoop, 39 servings in the 2lb container.

Like The Larger, Economical Size

I've ordered this protein powder before and decided to buy the larger size (5 pounds). I use it in the mornings with fresh or frozen fruit (natural sweetener) and vanilla flavored almond milk for my breakfast smoothies. Keeps me full for a good 3-4 hours till lunch. Good source of organic plant protein! Be careful as this is a very finely milled powder and can be messy on the countertop. Be sure to use an electric blender for better mixing and dissolving of the powder. If your looking for an organic, clean green protein powder, give this a try!

How to make it taste less horrible

I originally posted my review with the title "Difference between pain and suffering", and the opening line "Hot peppers taste like pain. This stuff tastes like suffering." The flavor hasn't grown on me, but I found a way to remove most of it. The key is that this protein powder doesn't really mix with water. If you stir it into some water, it mostly settles out, so the water can be poured off without losing too much of the protein powder. Boiling it seems to make it settle out more completely. About ten changes of water seem to be enough to bring the awful flavor down to a level where it can be covered up with other flavors. It doesn't settle out completely, so I lost some. And it doesn't exactly improve the flavor, so much as decreases it. But at least it's edible.

Here's the original version of my review:

Hot peppers taste like pain. This stuff tastes like suffering.

Hot peppers taste as though they're going to burn your face off. But if you can maintain full awareness of the fact that they're not really going to do so, a moderate amount actually tastes good.

This stuff tastes as though it's going to chain you to a rock and have a vulture eat your liver, over and over again every day, for all eternity. And even if you can maintain full awareness of the fact that it's not really going to do so, it's still difficult to tell what the difference is, at least until you spit it out and cleanse your palate with a whole lot of something else.

Soap thinks it can taste bad. Arugula thinks it can taste bad. Baking powder thinks it can taste bad. If you put this stuff in the same room with them, they slink off in embarrassment, because they just can't compare.

The gritty texture, by contrast, is merely unpleasant.

On the other hand, it arrived promptly, the packaging is satsifactory, and it is what it says it is. And apparently different people's sense of taste is different, so that if you can actually ingest this stuff it would presumably be a good deal.
