Not a Free Vine Review & I Hate Mushrooms - 5 Stars with Blendtec
UPDATE 2020: Still using this protein mix! Love it! We just throw it in a blender bottle with the wire ball, with water, and shake it up. Still fabulous. Healthier than we’ve ever been. Still wish the price would come down. At $2 per serving, it’s hard to keep a family in stock. This is why Americans are unhealthy and overweight. You can buy a fast food burger for $1. Anyway, this mix is high quality, and very tasty!

My chiropractor gave me some sample packets of this SoTru protein shake. I absolutely loathe mushrooms - they're filthy and mushy and just downright disgusting - but I promised him I would try it. I make my own meal replacement and protein shakes, so finding a high quality, certified organic, powder is exciting. But, it HAS TO taste good, or I won't drink it (hence why I make my own).
This morning, I put 1 cup of coconut milk, SoTru chocolate powder packet, 1 banana, and 1 cup of ice in my Blendtec, and gave it a whir on the smoothie setting (I stopped it with 13 seconds to go because it looked well-blended).

I was afraid to smell it, so took a drink, instead. It was fairly thick, but tasted great. I was surprised, to be honest. I took another drink, and truly enjoyed the taste. I felt brave enough to smell it by that point, and it smells good too.

I gave some to my extremely finicky teenage daughter, and she said it tasted great, and she would drink these with me every day. She almost never likes my homemade concoctions of smoothies, unless there's a ridiculous amount of fruit in them. But this one got her seal of approval.

You can read the list of organic ingredients yourself - I'm not going to list them to make my review any longer. I did not purchase this on Amazon, but am getting ready to (there's a $3 off coupon you can clip for this right now). Even though I didn't purchase this through Amazon, I felt compelled to write a review because the only ones that were on here so far are Vine reviews, where the reviewer received the product for free. There's nothing wrong with that, but I also like to see reviews from people who looked into a product enough to pay for it.

At over $1.50 per serving, I thought people might want to hear from someone who actually paid money (or will) for this product. The actual list price of $50 would make this over $2.00 per serving, so I will definitely be looking for this on sale.

Get yourself a high powered blender, like a Blendtec or Vitamix (I've had both, and greatly prefer the Blendtec), and get this powder!

A new contender for best vegan protein powder
This protein powder derives its protein primarily from brown rice and quinoa. It supplies 18 grams of protein per 28 gram scoop, a decent ratio per volume, which translates into just under an ounce. This is pretty competitive with other vegan protein powders. Garden of Life Raw Protein, also derived primarily from (sprouted) rice protein gives us 17 grams per scoop, which is 22 grams or .78 oz. Whereas Vega sport, derived from pea protein boasts 26 grams of protein per a 1.2oz scoop.

Each of these formulae contain different companion ingredients. For example this formula has a nice blend of medicinal mushrooms such as reishi, King trumpet, Lion's Mane, cordyceps, turkey tail, maitake and shiitake. I've done research on some of these and there is solid science that shows these to contain antioxidants and help provide immune system support. Turkey tail in particular has been shown to boost the immune system in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The Sotru formula also contains vital green powders such as spirulina and chlorella. It also contains fermented fruits and vegetables and a digestive blend of enzymes and probiotics. The Garden of Life product also contains a nice blend of probiotics and mixed tocopherols. In contrast, the Vega One Sport contains amino acids, which help in protein absorption, adding in a blend of digestive enzymes and probiotics as well.

It's difficult to ascertain which is the best formula. For instance, If we were just looking at protein, it appears the Vega Sport would be the clear winner. Cost per scoop is not all that different when one considers the overall volume of each container while factoring in the varying sizes of scoops.

As far as taste goes, none of these will win any taste contests. They are all rather chalky, although I feel the Sotru is the least chalky of the three under consideration. The Garden of life Raw Protein powder, clocking in at 1gram of sugar per scoop, is the least sweet tasting with no added stevia. I feel the Sotru, which has 1 gram of sugar per scoop and added stevia for sweetness, tastes about as sweet as the (Chocolate) Vega Sport which has 2.8 grams sugar per scoop (and also has added stevia). To tell the truth, I could've done without the stevia altogether- I just don't like that taste, nor do I need that level of sweetness. Please keep in mind the Vega Sport has the largest scoop of the three. In truth, all are very low in sugar.

Incidentally, every ingredient in Sotru vegan Protein Shake is organic. Kudos to Sotru on this. Almost everything in the GOL Raw Protein is organic as far as I can tell with a couple of possible exceptions. Vega Sport doesn't seem to list anything as organically grown.

All three products are gluten free. But the GOL product contains soy in the form of natto, a fermented food which is supposedly the most easily digested form of soy. It is also isn't clear whether or not the natto is derived from organically grown soybeans. When in doubt, I always assume it isn't. Also, the GOL product doesn't say on its label whether it's non GMO as the Sotru product clearly states. The Vega Sport doesn't carry a non GMO label either.

While it's difficult to assess products that differ in so many ways, I would ask the buyer to consider what are their most important decision making factors when choosing a vegan protein powder. Personally, I try to eat exclusively organically grown products and choose non GMO whenever possible. As my girlfriend is allergic to soy, that rules out the GoL, leaving the Sotru as my new product of choice. Going forward, I will use this protein powder in my morning smoothies.

I'll update this review after a month of use.

I actually purchased this...and Love it!
This tastes remarkably similar to Beach Body's chocolate shake, at 1/4 of the price! Sorry to my coach for her losing points, but this is an exceptional product.
Great nutritional value. I've had excellent taste combos with unsweeted almond, flax, quinoa, and cashew "milks" , coffee or water.
I have not experienced it being gritty, as some other rice proteins, nor the stevia issue, it is not overly sweet to me.
I use a small whisk on all my powders, no brand has ever mixed easily for me, cheap fix, or get the specific bottles for shakes that has the wire ball within for on the go.
Not sure why all the reviews for free product, but I love it and will continue to buy it from Amazon. I am going to try new flavors like vanilla and vanilla chai next.

Good purchase
Second day drinking the chocolate and I like the flavor. I was a shakeology drinker but it's too expensive. Plant based protein is my diet and finding a protein drink that smells and tastes good is not easy. I used blender first day with my coconut milk, second day I just used my blender cup and shook the drink; not gritty or chalky. I'll continue to purchase this.

Stirs in easily. Strong chocolate taste. But expensive.
Three people in my family tried this powder, and two were quite pleased with it. First, we tried it in our homemade green drinks (veggies only, pureed rather than juiced) at a dilution of 1 scoop for 16 ounces of drink. They recommend "Add one scoop to 8-16 ounces of water, almond milk, a smoothie, or your favorite beverage." The chocolate taste overwhelmed all the other tastes. That was too much chocolate taste for two of the testers. However, the blender mixed the powder thoroughly into the drink--no lumps. I next tried adding 1/3 scoop to my 8 ounces of green drink by simply stirring it in using my fork. After 10-20 seconds of medium-speed stirring, the powder had completely dissolved in. It gives a nice, smooth texture to the green drink, and at this dilution rate complimented rather than overwhelmed the drink. My father likes to put this on his oatmeal cereal (1 scoop per big bowl) and stir it in. He loved it! I've also tried it in plain water just to test it that way. The powder stirred in easily, but it tasted like protein powder in water. I really liked the taste better when it was mixed with something.

We're all used to the foods used in this powder, including fermented food. However, we only noticed the chocolate flavor and maybe a sweetener taste. My dad wanted to buy more of this protein powder, but this is nearly twice as much as what we're used to buying. If you can afford it, it's a nice, organic protein powder--vegan protein sources, mushroom blend, fermented fruit and veggie blend.

This bottle is 1.3 lbs (or 20.7 ounces or 588g). One full scoop provides 18g of protein, and the container has 21 scoops. It's dairy free, soy free, and gluten free. Organic. Non-GMO.

Tru goodness
I like that it has the vegetables already added to it. It saves me time from having to process them. As for the other organic vegan protein mixes I’ve tried, I like this one the best. Only complaint is the price. It’s currently twice as much compared to others.
