No effect for me (vs. big effect w/ modest amounts of probiotic foods). Wouldn't rely on this to prevent recurring c-diff.

After 3 courses of serious antibiotics for medically treated appendicitis, plus another round of antibiotics for the delayed appendectomy, I contracted c-diff from the hospital and was incredibly sick last fall. Since the treatment is yet more antibiotics, by gut was pretty ravaged, and I worked hard at repopulating the flora with tons of yogurt, sauerkraut, filmjolk, sour pickles, etc, and within a few weeks of ending my antibiotics, my gut felt pretty stable again.

However, it's a big challenge to keep on top of it when you're feeling healthy, and I've since had mild episodes of tummy trouble (no more c-diff, thankfully--but recurrence is always a fear) when I slack off on probiotic foods, so I considered a supplement as a backup. Presumably because probiotics are the "hot" thing right now, they're freakin expensive--pricier than buying actual food in most cases. But once you've suffered with c-diff, you're pretty willing to drop a fair amount to keep it away. Since recurrence can happen months later, it's critical to keep your gut flora healthy and thriving.

That said, since supplements are unregulated industry in the U.S. (and several studies have shown an unreliable range of actual ingredients in random testing), I'm always a little nervous about spending my health dollars on supplements. But having a backup plan to eating perfectly is always wise.

I've been using these for about 3 weeks, and I don't think that I can recommend them. For the first week, I tried 2 capsules/day (double the label's suggestion, but extra probiotics pose no threat) with no noticeable effect on my gut--versus a noticeable day or two of improvement with a single serving of homemade sauerkraut. I've nearly finished up the bottle, and while they're doing no harm, the only time my gut is stable is when I'm also conscientiously eating probiotic foods.

Bottom line: I can't speak to their effectiveness for less urgent gut flora needs, but if you're trying to stave off a recurrence of c-diff, I'd stick with daily probiotic foods.

Pills were bad.

I’ve been buying Solgar probiotics for years but had I trouble getting them recently due to the pandemic. I finally found some again on Amazon and bought two bottles just in case. For some reason both bottles of probiotics smell like BBQ smoke, which is not a smell that any of my other Solgar probiotic purchases ever had, and they upset my stomach each time I took them. I ended up throwing them out since I have taken them out of their original packaging to place them in my pill dispenser.

Kind of Okay

The product description offers platitudes like quality of strains versus quantity, but having been using probiotics for a while now, there's nothing too special about 20 billion cfu. Most probiotics these days easily offer 20 billion if not double the amount, and of the same thoroughly researched caliber of healthy strains. In terms of gut regulation, I switched from garden of life for a month and noticed no real change from one versus the other so if it's about cost savings you may want to experiment and Solgar could be a contender. At the end of the day, don't let the slick sales pitch fool you into thinking you're somehow getting "better" bacteria than other brands offering similarly high or higher live organism counts...
