Sour taste that I didn't anticipate (bought to make homemade toothpaste)

I know this is just due to the purposes for which I bought this, but just wanted to write this up in case it would help others. I bought this since it was linked to several sites showing how to make homemade remineralizing toothpaste. It wasn't until after I tasted it that I realized it fizzles and has a surprisingly very sour taste that I did some research and found out there are 2 kinds of calcium powder, and that this is the sour kind, which is not so pleasant in a toothpaste formulation. Not sure why those blogs linked to this kind of calcium powder? Wish I knew this so I could've gotten the other calcium powder, as I also worry about whether the sourness means higher acidity which means not so good for tooth enamel? Anyways, haven't used it again since that first time, will do more research.

NOW products MOSTLY GMO free. This has GMO soy

First, a big thank you to Amazon for providing this forum. I am grateful for this.

Bought this without looking to make sure it was gmo free. Bought NOW gmo-free lecithin--EXCELLENT product.(had to request that the Co-op store order gmo-free lecithin) Bought NOW gmo-free xylitol and have just re-ordered. Great product. Not only is this powder not gmo-free, it seems to be "hiding gmo content" because it is a calcium-mg. supp. It has a surprise-- soy-derivative on the label. The supp. is not listed in NOW'S "COMPLETE LIST OF GMO-FREE PRODUCTS" on NOW's website. It has this dorky rating from some rating organization, which they proudly display. Its a "GMP" seal (not finding a gmo free indication saying otherwise, I thought it was for "genetically modified product" at first when it got here). I forgot to include this product with my other order I made the same evening, paying by mistake for standard shipping. This product is going back in the mail, still sealed. The soy or its possible infusion with herbicide may be why some are having problems with loose stools. The rest of the formula for this powder is "to die for", I think. I'm a 66 old lady (ha ha), still trying to exercise regularly, and have felt that mg. in the past has helped leg pain after. Now I need calcium also to combat a tired back, and hoped to get everything I need in a powder. Think again. Already have large capsules (triple OOO's)if it won't dissolve. Really thought that it would NOT be gmo, like so many other of their great products. Wouldn't be so grumpy---if we were not trying to volunteer to get the labeling initiative passed here in the golden state so gave it 2 for trying, and because it was bargain priced, instead of 1 star--LOL (No bargain)

Important mineral combo!

My physician was very pleased to learn that I had started taking this particular combo. It has a double duty. It both supplements my body’s mineral needs for optimal nutrition, and it also protects me by helping to prevent oxilate crystals from forming anywhere in my body due to my high “leafy greens” diet. *If you’re drinking green smoothies more than 4 times a week OR you have ‘stones’ OR joint/muscle pain ... you need this combo! Recommend 👍

A nice way to get your calcium and magnesium

I like taking supplements in powder form because I think they are more easily absorbed by the body. I think this is especially true for calcium and magnesium. You can mix this with either water or juice.

The reasons I like this product:

* The purity. The only ingredients in here are calcium citrate, magnesium citrate and vitamin D. All three ingredients work together to support strong bones. It is suitable for vegetarians and vegans too.

* Small amount needed. You only need 1 1 /4 teaspoon so an 8 ounce container lasts you for over a month (50 servings per container).

* The ingredient quality. Calcium citrate is more easily absorbed that calcium carbonate, the ingredient in most calcium supplements. Magnesium citrate is higher quality magnesium than magnesium oxide, which can have side effects.

* I sleep so much better on the days I take this supplement. I have learned that it's best for me to take it in the late afternoon.

* It's easy to fit into my day. I mix it up with water and drink it during my light cardio workouts in the afternoon.

One thing to note is that the taste is somewhat sour, which may not appeal to some folks. If you mix it with juice, you may not taste it as much.

I recommend this product to anyone wanting to add more calcium, magnesium and vitamin d into their diet.

The powder: High in magnesium but easy to use

You need magnesium to be able to absorb any form of calcium. This powder takes care of that issue. However, if high doses of magnesium give you diarrhea like they do me, it is possible that this product by itself would not be right for you.

Calcium citrate is supposed to be more easily absorbed by the body than the calcium carbonate found in the majority of over the counter calcium supplements. What is so nice about the pure powder is that it is "one less pill" (or 3 or 4 less) to swallow. It mixes easily into juice, tea, soup, cereal and other wet/moist foods and drinks. It does NOT mix easily into a thick milkshake type smoothie. It turns clear liquids cloudy and settles out if you let it sit for some time.

The trick is to remember to measure it out and mix it in!!!

Keep in mind that you won't absorb any form of calcium if you don't have the proper combination of magnesium, zinc, Vitamins A and D3. The ideal thing is to get all of your nutritional needs from whole food, not from supplements. Sometimes this is not possible for various reasons, and it is good to know what is in everything you "take" including the foods you eat.

It is a good idea to get professional assistance in the form of testing to find out what supplements you really need. And, if you are taking one supplement you need to do a bit of research to make sure you are getting the proper balance of other things that are needed for your body to use that supplement so you are not throwing your money out the window.

I believe this calcium magnesium citrate is sourced from corn, although I have not contacted the NOW company to specifically ask that question. In any case, it gives me diarrhea - as does anything else made from corn. It doesn't bother my husband. You need to know your own body and what you can and can't tolerate.

As one other reviewer pointed out: This product is NOT GMO free. I ordered it because I wanted a calcium magnesium blend powder that I could use instead of taking 4 to 6 more pills a day and wasn't thinking about what it was made from. My mistake. I will not be reordering this product. Somehow and somewhere I will find a healthy form of calcium that is certified non-GMO.
